Understanding Attendance Alerts and What They Mean
Posted Date: 04/07/26 (12:12 PM)
Dear Stony Creek Families,
You may have recently received an automatic attendance alert through ParentSquare indicating that your child’s attendance has dropped below 94%. We understand this can raise questions, and we want to help clarify how attendance is calculated.
In California, attendance is based on total days present, not whether an absence is excused or unexcused.
Important to know:
- Both excused and unexcused absences count toward attendance percentage
- Even when an absence is approved (illness, appointments, etc.), it still impacts overall attendance
- California Education Code requires schools to monitor and report attendance for all students
- Attendance below 94% can impact a student’s learning and progress
- Missing just 1–2 days per month can quickly lower attendance below this level
- Regularly check attendance in Aeries Parent Portal
- Communicate with the school if your child will be absent
- Make every effort to have students present each school day
Warmly,
Stony Creek Joint Unified School District
